That is The Lodge at Malibou Lake. And it might be one of Southern California’s most pleasantly surprising wedding venues. The first thing that catches you off guard is the setting. The Lodge sits beside a private lake in the Santa Monica Mountains, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a secluded Northern California retreat than a typical Southern California wedding venue. Mature sycamores and oak trees frame the property, the water reflects the changing light throughout the day, and the entire estate feels wonderfully removed from the pace of Los Angeles despite being less than an hour away. There is an immediate sense of escape.

Guests arrive and forget they are anywhere near the city. The lake, gardens, pathways, and historic lodge architecture create a setting that feels intimate, welcoming, and refreshingly different from the ballroom-and-beach formula that dominates much of Southern California.

And then there is the pricing.

The Lodge operates differently than many Southern California venues. Weddings are managed exclusively through Chef Cordelia Catering, with pricing generally falling between $250–$400 per guest, depending on guest count, season, and day of the week. While Saturday celebrations typically land toward the higher end of that range, the pricing includes many of the foundational elements couples often rent elsewhere, including tables, chairs, dishware, lounge furniture, catering, and service. When viewed through that lens, the value proposition becomes much easier to understand.

The sweet spot feels like 120–200 guests, allowing couples to take full advantage of the Great Lawn, lakefront setting, and lodge spaces while preserving the relaxed, destination-like atmosphere that makes Malibou Lake so appealing. The Ballroom’s built-in indoor option adds an extra layer of planning confidence without sacrificing style. And in a wedding landscape increasingly focused on creating meaningful weekends rather than simply beautiful photographs, that feels remarkably current.

Wedding Day Blueprint

The Lodge at Malibou Lake feels like old California decided to throw a lakeside dinner party and invite the mountains. Set beside a private lake in the Santa Monica Mountains, it has winding canyon-road arrival, sycamore and oak shade, a green lawn, a front porch made for cocktails, and a ballroom ready for the part of the night when everyone stops being elegant and starts being fun. Rustic, romantic, and just polished enough — exactly the right behavior.

Getting Ready

The morning begins in the private dressing rooms, where the day builds with that quiet-but-excited hum before everything officially starts. Hair and makeup spread across the rooms, robes hang nearby, details are styled with olive branches or sprigs of rosemary, and the lake sits just outside setting the tone. Keep the look warm and tactile: soft whites, sage, almond, stone, wood, loose waves, and a gown with movement. This is not the place for anything too shiny or sharp. The Lodge wants romance with sleeves rolled up.

Ceremony

The Great Lawn is the natural ceremony move, with chairs facing the lake and the Santa Monica Mountains rising around the edges. A low floral installation works beautifully here — creamy white blooms, loose greenery, olive branches, and aisle pieces that feel gathered rather than overworked. Just before the ceremony begins, the lake catches the light, a ripple moves across the water, and suddenly the whole setting feels alive. Let the view stay visible. The lake showed up dressed and would like to be seen.

Appetizers & Cocktails

After vows, guests move toward the Front Porch, Library Bar, and lakeside patio for cocktails that feel less like a holding pattern and more like a private club weekend. Drinks are in hand, guests drift between shade, dock views, lounge areas, and conversation, and the property does that lovely thing where everyone seems to know where to go without being herded. This is a good moment for spritzes, tray-passed bites, portraits around the lake, and one very smug little rosemary garnish.

Dinner Reception

Dinner on the lawn is where the Italian-inspired direction really sings. Long wood tables stretch beneath café lights, candles reflect softly on the water, and the palette stays warm and unfussy: white china, sage and almond tones, stone vessels, potted herbs, rosemary, lavender, olive oil favors, and loose white florals. The whole evening feels transported without getting costume-y. Mountains fading, lake glowing, guests lingering over dinner — suddenly Agoura is giving Tuscany-adjacent, and honestly, she’s pulling it off.

Dancing & Merriment

When dinner finishes, the party moves inside to the Ballroom for a clear second act. Warm wood, big windows, a real dance floor, and indoor structure keep the energy from floating away across the lawn. Guests come in sun-kissed from dinner, grab another drink, find the music, and the night tightens into that happy indoor-party buzz. Music carries back toward the lake, conversations spill out around the edges, and the whole celebration starts feeling wonderfully lived-in.

End-of-Night Send-Off

The send-off should stay simple and lakeside. Guests gather near the Front Porch or outside the Lodge, jackets appear over shoulders, the last drinks are down, and the couple steps into the mountain air with the lake sitting dark behind them. A classic car, a quiet final wave, or a sparkler-style exit if approved keeps the ending romantic without turning it into a circus. One last cheer, one last look back, and then off into the canyon roads.
